The Diputación de Ourense, through the project “Raia Termal”, funded by the INTERREG Spain-Portugal programme, advances in the thermalism industry by presenting the first “thermal digital card” at the Termatalia International Fair in Uruguay. This innovation represents a milestone in thermal wellness and promises to transform the user experience.

The “thermal digital card” is the result of the vision and commitment pursued by the Raia Termal project to make thermalism more accessible, efficient and enriching. With this card, users have access to updated information on the provincial public thermalism programmes, exclusive promotions supported by the provincial institution and a faster and safer identification in the thermal centres.

During his visit to the Termatalia fair, the president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle, had the opportunity to explore closely this innovation, which stands as the first of its kind in the spa industry. The director of the Welfare area of the Diputación de Ourense, José Juan Cerdeira, guided President Lacalle through the details of this cutting-edge technology.

José Juan Cerdeira commented: “The ‘thermal digital card’ is testament to the Diputación de Ourense’s unwavering commitment to excellence in thermal wellness. We are excited about the opportunity that this innovation represents for our industry and for those seeking the highest quality wellness”.

This launch at Termatalia-Uruguay demonstrates Raia Termal’s prominent position in the wellness industry, leaving an impression that will last and mark a significant milestone in the development of modern thermalism.

The European program ‘Raia Termal: dous países un destino’, a cross-border cooperation initiative co-financed by the Feder Funds through the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal Program (POCTEP) 2014-2020, has put an end to its first edition, having executed 90% of the planned actions, with an investment of 2 million euros. They participated as partners the Deputation of Ourense, the Miño-Sil Hydrographic Confederation and the municipal chambers of Melgaço and Terras de Bouro, with an area of action that covered from the south of the province of Ourense to the north of Portugal touching the cross-border thermal cores of the rivers Miño – Cortegada-Melgaço -, and Limia, with Bande, Muíños and Terras do Bouro.

The objective of the program was to create a network of cooperation between Ourense and northern Portugal to enhance the thermal wealth of this environment, putting in value joint management and marketing initiatives to create a single border thermal destination, contributing to the development of quality tourism in the area. And, as it was analyzed in the closing day, held in Melgaço, it seems that this objective has been achieved. For the president of the Deputation of Ourense, the results of this project show “that we know how to work together and value the territory, at a time of new economic opportunities through European funds, but that they are nothing if there is no ability to formulate initiatives like this”. So much so that Manuel Baltar already slips the possibility of a second project Raia Termal “that enhances what is ours, as the thermalism” and should be called, as he points out, “Dous destinations, a country” because “I consider that we are a unique country”.

As for the results of the program, the project director, Manuel González, explained that works such as the recovery of river areas affected by sewage in Baños de Riocaldo (Lobios) or the Regato da Pousa in Muiños were executed; natural areas that complement the leisure offer associated with thermal tourism were enhanced, such as the Bande motorhome area, the signaling of the Cortegada thermal route, the construction of a pedestrian walkway on the Caldo river and a bicycle path in Lobios; the water line at the do Peso thermal baths was cleaned, subway containers were installed in Melgaço and environmental recovery and access to the Gerês river in Terras do Bouro was undertaken.

“It will be achieved, sharing a single and common tourism strategy under the slogan, Raia Termal: a destination in two countries”. It is one of the main conclusions that highlights the Miño-Sil Hydrographic Confederation of the closing day of the project POCTEP Raia Termal held this Friday in the Portuguese municipality of Melgaço. Day that concluded with a positive value of cross-border cooperation, with the parties involved agreeing that the thermal and natural potentials of the territory “provide the rural world with opportunities,” says the president of the CHMS-S. According to José Antonio Quiroga, “it is important to highlight the social and economic value of the thermal sector and to make visible the importance of the economic activity that it generates”.

The event, in which the president of the Municipal Chamber of Melgaço, Manoel Batista, acted as host, was also attended by the president of the Diputación de Ourense, Manuel Baltar, who said that “the answer to the welfare that we pursue in this time of post-pandemic is in the thermalism as a concept of health, which is the most precious asset we have”, demonstrating with the results of this project “that we know how to work together and value the territory, at a time of new economic opportunities through European funds, but that are nothing if there is no ability to formulate initiatives like this”.

In the act, the project manager, Manuel Sarria, explained it detailing each of the actions that have been developed, and alluded to the recovery of river spaces affected by wastewater in thermal environments, works that were carried out in Os Baños de Riocaldo, in Lobios, and in the Regato de A Pousa, in Muiños. As for the joint management and promotion of the destination, Manuel Sarria explained the design of several tourist products that combine the different resources and services of the cross-border territory as a reinforcement of the current offer.

Melgaço, December 16 2021.- The partners in the POCTEP Raia Termal project have held today in the Portuguese municipality of Melgaço the Closing Day in which they have positively assessed the cross-border cooperation and have agreed to confirm that the territories with potential in thermalism and nature provide the rural world with opportunities for the future.

“The POCTEPs are a financial instrument that allows to improve the fluvial environments as a complement to the valuable natural and cultural heritage present in the Rhaetian territory”, concluded Quiroga.

“This project allowed us to embrace the territories, to create relationships in the territories, to create bridges that will last for other and bigger projects that cooperation has to do. With the “Raia Termal” project we managed to carry out relevant actions on both sides of the border.

We are all aware today that without close cooperation between both sides of the border we will not be able to make the right path for the territories.

Only with the attractiveness from the industrial point of view and the bet on the development in a set of important areas in our territories, we will be able to bring economy and more quality of life to the territories. These are some of the important challenges, in my opinion, of what cooperation is. And the great result is, undoubtedly, the rapprochement of the territories, a greater connection between them.

The challenges are great. We must take advantage of them to bring more development to both sides of the borders”. – said Manoel Batista, Mayor of Melgaço.

Now is the time to start thinking about the program “Raia Termal II”, said Manuel Baltar, “that if on this first occasion had a title, in the next project should be called so, because I think we are a unique country”, noting in this regard that “I feel at home in the condition of Ourense as the Spanish province that has more kilometers of border with Portugal and the close and historical ties that bind us.”

The bus will have a digital tourist office and those who visit it will also be able to hire tourist services.

The Provincial Council presented yesterday in the Bispo Cesáreo square the bus that will promote the values and resources of the more than 200 kilometers of Raia ourensana. Under the name “Raia Termal en route”, the initiative will travel more than 1,500 kilometers and will visit more than 25 points during the next ten days, incorporating as a novelty a digital tourism office and the participation of university students with scholarships in the “Erasmus Rural” plan.

The president of the County Council, Manuel Baltar, said that “to disseminate our heritage, when in times of pandemic and post-pandemic as these people are looking for wellness, disconnection and nature, values that we have in the province of Ourense and Portugal”. In the framework of the program “Raia Termal”, financed with European funds, “the bus that starts today from Ourense will allow us to value the territory and its thermal heritage, delving into the historical, cultural, social and natural links that we have between Ourense and Portugal as German towns”.

Baltar added that the bus, English, vintage and adapted, will not only visit the five municipalities that integrate the European program – Lobios, Bande, Muíños, Cortegada, Melgaço and Terras de Bouro-, “but will travel to other important capitals such as Porto, Vigo, A Coruña or Santiago de Compostela”. The tour will end in Ourense, coinciding with the celebration of Termatalia.

With regard to the “Erasmus Rural” initiative, a group of young scholarship holders from the municipalities involved will be responsible for giving explanations to the questions asked during the visits made by the bus. The provincial president pointed out that these bags are “destined to young people to study and divulge our territory and its resources, reinforcing the attention to the tourists. More than a hundred young men and women under 35 years old set up self-employment or entrepreneurial projects in their local council of residence, helping to fix population, employment and wealth in the rural territory”.

The bus incorporates a second novelty: a digital tourist office, which through QR codes will allow to download from a map to a collection of postcards and other cultural products related to the project. But the most important digital element lies in the possibility of facilitating digital transformation for companies, allowing travelers to book and purchase services in the cross-border area through the Internet.

The aim of the “Raia Termal” project is to enhance the value of natural areas and promote quality thermal tourism in different areas, promoting economic activity in the neighboring towns of Ourense and northern Portugal.
